Looking for a Carrier411 alternative
If you are looking at alternatives to Carrier411, it is usually for one of three reasons: the interface feels dated, you want alerts rather than lookups, or you are trying to work out whether you should be paying for this at all.
Those are different problems with different answers. Here is the honest version, including the cases where the answer is not us.
What the options actually do
The category splits into four jobs, and products cluster around one of them.
| What it is built for | Rough cost | |
|---|---|---|
| Carrier411 | Cheap lookups and monitoring. Long-established | ~$70/mo |
| SaferWatch | Monitoring and qualification, mid-market | Mid-market |
| DAT CarrierWatch | Monitoring, bundled with the DAT load board | Bundled |
| Truckstop RMIS / Descartes MyCarrierPortal | Carrier onboarding packets, COI collection | Enterprise |
| Highway | Real-time carrier identity verification | ~$1,500–2,500/mo |
| MC Sentry | Daily monitoring of authority and insurance filings | $0–199/mo |
| A spreadsheet + a script | Whatever you build | Free |
Where each is genuinely better than us
Highway, for identity. If your problem is that the carrier who booked is not the carrier who shows up, that is an operational process with humans making phone calls. We do not do it and are not going to. If double-brokering and MC takeover are your live problem and you can carry the cost, Highway solves a problem we do not.
RMIS and MyCarrierPortal, for onboarding. Collecting packets, W-9s and certificates from carriers and chasing them to completion is a workflow product. We do not have one.
DAT CarrierWatch, if you already live in DAT. One fewer login, one fewer invoice.
A spreadsheet, if your list is short and you patch it properly. We wrote up exactly how to patch one, including the fixes that remove most of the false negatives. If you have ten carriers and a working script, you may not need to buy anything.
Where we are different
We alert on the gap between insurance ending and FMCSA acting.
When a carrier's insurance is cancelled, authority does not go inactive the same day. Across carriers that had both events, the suspension order followed a median of 17 days later. For that entire window the public record reads Active while no primary coverage is on file.
Roughly 5% of carriers holding a current insurance filing are in that state at any given moment. On a 500-carrier list sample, 6.6% showed Active authority alongside an insurance exception — about one row in fifteen that a status-based check reports as fine.
That is the thing we built around. Details, with the numbers, in Active authority does not mean insured.
We are self-serve. No demo, no sales call, no annual contract. The lookup pages are free and un-gated — you can check a carrier right now without an account.
We are cheap, because the underlying data is public and the infrastructure is static files. That is not a moat and we are not pretending otherwise; it is just where the price lands when one person runs it.
Where we are worse
Being straight about this, because you will find out anyway:
- No identity verification. See above. Different problem, different product
- No onboarding workflow. No packets, no COI collection, no chasing
- No safety scoring. We report authority and insurance filings, not CSA percentiles
- We are new. Carrier411 has been doing this for two decades. That is worth something
real, and if a long track record is what you are buying, we do not have one yet
How to choose
- Identity fraud is your live problem → Highway
- You need onboarding workflow → RMIS or MyCarrierPortal
- You already pay for DAT → CarrierWatch is the cheap increment
- You want cheap lookups and nothing else → Carrier411 does that and has for years
- You want to know the morning a carrier's coverage lapses → that is what we do
- Ten carriers and a working script → patch the script
The honest test
Take your actual carrier list and run it against whatever you are considering, including us. Count the rows where the answers disagree, then check a few by hand against FMCSA directly.
That comparison settles it faster than any feature table, including this one.
